Growing: could be started anytime in tropics, yet the best time to start is winter, as the sun is more intense in summer and afterwards it rains, which increases the humidity level and makes it intolerable for the plant to thrive. If planting in summer, it’s best to choose a very bright, sunny location with plenty of sunlight. Planting in temperate climates, start lavender indoors 4 weeks before the last frost in spring. Refrigerate seed for 4 to 6 weeks before sowing. Sow seed in flats in full sun or under fluorescent lights. Seeds will germinate in 14 to 21 days. Transplant lavender outdoors in mid to late spring. Outdoor planting time:Sow lavender seed outdoors in late spring after the last frost or in fall. Fall planted seed will germinate the following spring.
Soil: Light, well-draining. Lavender grows best in lean, gritty soil with good drainage and low nutrient content. Growing in lean soil not only keeps the roots healthy by allowing excess moisture to drain off but also encourages a higher concentration of the plant's fragrant oils.
Depth: Use shallow seed trays or containers, sprinkle the seeds on the top of soil and just barely cover the seeds with soil, as they need light to germinate. It’s very important.
Watering: Keep the soil moist but not wet. Moderate watering ONLY when the soil is dry to the touch.
Light: Place the pots in a very bright location with plenty of sunlight. Lavender needs 6-8h of sunlight a day for the best performance. If such a place isn’t available, use fluorescent lights. Lavender seedlings will be ready to transplant once they have several leaves per plant.
Fertilizing: Established, mature lavender plants rarely need fertilizer if they are growing well and blooming abundantly. However, plants growing in very poor, unamended soil or pots may benefit from occasional fertilizer applications to encourage blooming (we recommend using TSM Organic Growth Activator, which supports healthy & robust growth, and promotes abundant and deep flowering).
One plant per pot. Matures 70-90 days. Germinates in about 2 weeks.
Pests & diseases: aphids, whiteflies, alfaalfa mosaic virus. We highly recommend using TSM Organic Neem Oil for a natural overall protection and treatment against pests and diseases.
Companion plants: sage, thyme, marigolds, rosemary, shasta daisies.
