Biennial, decorative french heirloom noted for its fine flavour and beautiful purple buds that look pretty on the big ornamental plants.Plants reach 2m (6.5ft) tall and are valued for its attractive appearance and delicate flavour. Artichokes can be eaten alone steamed, baked or fried, adds a delicate, smooth flavor to salads, pasta dishes, pizzas, desserts. Matures in 120 days.
Growing: Not suitable for tropical climate.
Planting season: very early spring, indoors (Feb). To set the buds, artichokes need a period of vernalization, at least two weeks of cold temp below 10C (50F), yet they are extremely cold sensitive. Transplant after the danger of last frost is gone before spring temp rise too high. To begin germinating, artichokes need a temp around 20C (70-75F) and will take 2-3 weeks to sprout.
Soil: Warm, fertile, well-drained soil.
Sowing depth: 1cm (0.4in).
Spacing: 100cm (39in) apart.
Light: full sun.
Watering: keep the soil barely moist.
Fertilizing: once seedlings occur, fertilize them with wea solution at least once a week. These plants are heavy feeders.
