Annual climbing or trailing plant native to Ecuador and Peru. Can be grown as a climbing vine up a trellis or as a trailing plant along the ground. Fast growing vigorous plant with bright green lobed leaves and masses of lemony yellow spurred serrated flowers resembling birds. Plant grows 2-4m tall and sets 3-4cm wide pretty flowers. Beautiful grown in flower gardens, balconies, hanging pots etc. Tolerant of poor soil conditions. Also known as "Canarybird Flower". Flowers bloom abundantly from end of Jun until the end of autumn. Seeds can be soaked overnight prior planting. Flowers are edible.
Growing: year round in tropical climate; in temperate climates you can directly sow the seed outdoors after all risk of frost has passed, or start them ahead of time indoors, about six to eight weeks before your final frost. Seeds germinate in 10-14 days.
Soil: Canary creeper likes a neutral to slightly acidic soil pH between 6.1 and 7.2, rich in organic matter. Whatever soil mixture you plant it in should be well-draining to prevent root rot or any fungal diseases.
Sowing depth: 0.6cm deep.
Spacing: 30cm apart if sown in the ground. If grown in pots, choose at least 20l or bigger.
Light: full sun/partial shade. If afternoon sun is very hot, provide some shade, especially for young seedlings.
Watering: moderate. Water when the soil feels dry to the touch.
Fertilizing: Do not fertilize your canary creeper vine unless absolutely necessary under circumstances like yellowing or dropping leaves. Generally, the plant will perform much better if feed with an organic compost.
