Romaine variety with dark green leaves and a cream to white heart. It forms vase-shaped heads which can grow up to 31 cm tall. Its outer leaves are usually harvested as needed for garden fresh salads or a sweet, crisp addition to sandwiches, rather than the whole head being harvested at once. This variety is perfect for baby leaf harvest. Oval shaped green leaves are tender and great flavoured. Goes very well in braising mixes, salads, garnishes etc. Takes 29 days to baby leaf and 70-85 days to full maturity. In addition to its long season and exceptional nutrition values, Parris Island is resistant to lettuce mosaic virus and tipburn.
Growing: Planting season: Year round in tropical climate; in temperate climates - early spring, starting the seeds indoors 4-6 weeks prior the last frost date and transplanting when the danger of last frost is gone, or direct seeding once the soil is workable. Sow every 2-3 weeks for continous supply of fresh lettuce.
Soil: light, loose, fertile soil with a pH of 6.3-6.8, preferably rich in organic matter.
Sowing depth: 0.1/0.3in (0.5-1cm) deep.
Spacing: Baby leaf - continious band; full size - 8 to 12in (20-30in);
Row space: Baby leaf - 3/4in (1.9cm) between bands, 16 rows/36in (91cm) bed.
