Early, eye catching heirloom due to its unique look also called 'black palm'. Outstanding plants reach 90cm (35in) tall and form deep green, 10in (25cm) long and 2-3in (5-7cm) wide leaves that have embossed texture. Highly decorative leaves are striking ornamental and are perfect for salads, soups, stir-fried etc. Posses crisp, tender, sweet flavour that gets sweeter after a freeze. Growing: Planting season: Year round in tropical climates; in temperate climates - Early spring, starting from transplants four weeks prior the last frost date or direct seeding once the soil can be worked. Fall, sowing seeds two months prior first expected frost for full size and up until frost for baby leaf.
Soil: Well drained, fertile soil high in organic matter, with a pH 6-7.5. Can tolerate slightly alkaline soil.
Sowing depth: 1/4-1/2in (0.6-1.2cm);
Plant spacing: Baby leaf, direct seeding - 60 seeds/ft in 2-4in (5-10cm) bands; Full size - 12-18in (30-45cm).
